Hello!

Priya here, with a subject that I feel is of utmost importance. Self- care is something that has gained more momentum these past few years, and with good reason. Self- care is important in being able to avoid burnout, this is especially important in a career as a dental hygienist. You may love your job, but after a while, it can become repetitive and difficult to continue. Especially if you experience musculoskeletal disorders or any other health issues that can arise due to practicing dental hygiene. Let’s talk about a few self-care practices that dental hygienists can practice to help prevent or treat burnout.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional health care provider, please consult your health care provider for treatment of any kind.

1) Musculoskeletal Disorders are a Real Issue

This may seem like a no brainer, but I didn’t really understand how bad it could get until I injured myself less than a year into practicing Hygiene.  Practicing ergonomics early on in practice helps prolong your time as a clinician. But then again, there are people who do not get musculoskeletal disorders that are debilitating. But everyone is different, it’s best to practice prevention instead of trying to maintain a musculoskeletal disorder after developing one.

2) Massages or Chiropractor

Everyone is different in opinions when it comes to whether they feel comfortable with one or the other. I have tried both, and I prefer Massages if I had to pick one. I have a slipped disc in my back as well as one that is slightly slipped on the base of my neck. This makes me susceptible to pain, but I notice when the muscles around those areas are relaxed it helps me deal with the pain more. Again, you have to see what helps you the best, but it is worth a shot to try them and see if you like one or the other or both.

3) Let yourself Veg Out.

Ok, I am so guilty of this, I veg out more than I probably should be but I also have other stuff wrong with me lol. You need days where you can just do nothing, or something that you love or relaxes you. If you like reading, read a book. Some like crafting, do that. Others like to watch comfort shows or movies. Do what is going to make you relax, and don’t feel guilty. It is easier said than done. Nothing makes me feel more guilty than when I’m trying to watch my comfort show and the pile of dishes are side-eyeing me from the sink.

4) Work Out

I wish I could say that I liked working out, because I don’t. But the benefits of exercise are proven by science and recommended by health care providers. Do what you enjoy to make you move. My husband loves weight lifting, personally I like walking outside, jogging outside or Pilates. But there can still be that mental barrier to exercise. Some have found it helpful to find ways to add movement to the day. You can do squats during commercials of a show, or if you have a stepper or walking pad you can use while enjoying your favorite show.

These are just a few things you can do to take care of yourself, there are plenty more that are a google or youtube search away. What are your favorite self care routines? Comment below!

Ciao,

Priya.
